Main Street Scarecrow Invasion

October 10, 2014

The signs of fall are all around us in Woodstock. As the leaves change color and flutter to the ground, pumpkins perch on porches, and fall harvest decorations are spotted throughout town, there is one other sight that simply cannot be missed throughout Woodstock. Anyone who visits downtown and strolls Main Street in the month of October is sure to catch a glimpse of the scarecrows that line the sides of the street.

Bales of hay, cornstalks, overalls, and flannel shirts are common in many of the friendly characters. While, they may intend to scare off the crows, these hay stuffed beings attract the attention and delight of many children and adults alike.

Why are these scarecrows invading the streets of Downtown Woodstock? It is all part of the initiative of Main Street Woodstock. All proceeds raised from the Scarecrow Invasion will be donated to the non-profit GROW. This local organization has a clever acronym for Green Reaps Opportunity for Woodstock, that captures part of what they do in growing beautiful landscaping and beautifying the downtown with holiday decor.

Local clubs, groups, businesses, and others had the opportunity to invade the Main Street area with their own scarecrow. All they had to do to enter was pay the $20 fee, get their creative juices flowing, and put a scarecrow in place by October 1st. Now that the 1st has come and gone, the scarecrows are eagerly seeking votes. The general public can observe the scarecrows and vote for their chosen favorite at the Woodstock Visitor’s Center located in the historic Dean’s Store on Main Street.

Each vote costs only $1, but the money raised will help keep downtown Woodstock beautiful. Even more, the winning scarecrow and it’s creator will win a trophy and bragging rights!

For a preview of the scarecrows, take a look at the Downtown Woodstock YouTube video above and check out some sneak peek pictures on the Main Street Woodstock Facebook page. They are fun to see on video, but even more entertaining in person! Don’t forget to stop by and vote after you take some time to check out the creativity and fun that’s going on in Woodstock!
